Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955), photographer, conceptual artist, teacher, essayist, critic and art promoter specialized in photography. Fontcuberta is one of the most internationally renowned Catalan photographers. He also works as a theorist of the photographic image and as a photographic editor, promoting contemporary photography through numerous events, conferences and exhibitions. He was one of the founders of PhotoVision magazine (1980), a bilingual publication in Spanish and English specializing in photography. Both his theoretical and photographic works question the assumed truth of photographic images. His multifaceted artistic production revolves around the verisimilitude of the image and its capacity to represent and supplant the real world. He is interested in the social function of photography, the public use of the image and the intoxication of information. Many of his works are constructed as parodies that activate the viewer’s illusion, warning him of the danger of disbelief and of the fallacious mechanisms in the public transmission of information and knowledge.
